Work units or credits serve as currency in the Village shops, and are kept track of with a hole-punched credit card. Although various members of the community in the Village hold down jobs or even own businesses, most, including Number 6 do not have jobs, though are given a comfortable lifestyle. Considered 'cheap' by Village standards are items such as non-alcoholic Whiskey at 24 Work Units and non-alcoholic Vodka at 16 Work Units. For coming first in an arts and crafts competition, Number 6 wins 2000 Work Units.[1]
